Small Business Startup in 2010 – Are You On the Front Of The Wave?

small-business-startup-catching-the-waveAre we doing the right thing at the right time? So many successful business leaders I have been fortunate to work with in my life had that question always on the tip of their tongue. This includes both Fortune 100 leaders I worked with and small business entrepreneurs I worked alongside. It has become embedded in my personal day-to-day inner conversation over the years!   When faced with a business decision – whether a strategic choice or a day-to-day tactical decision – it always is on my list.  I have named it my Small Business Guiding Principle #1 When I look at small business startup ideas for my business – I query myself  – is this the right thing to be implementing right now? It would serve you and others well if it is at the top of every entrepreneur’s small business start-up checklist.

Focusing on doing the right things at the right time are extremely important for a startup entrepreneur to be successful.  You must not however lose sight of the question “Are we doing things right?” and focusing on doing things better and more effective.

One of my favorite entrepreneur startup principles is The famous management guru Warren G. Bennis’ quote: “Leaders are people who do the right thing; managers are people who do things right.”

If you want to be a successful small business entrepreneur – you must always be a leader – you can hire a great manager to help you implement the right things at the right time in the right way.

So by now you must be asking yourself what does this have to do with Small Business Start-up in 2010 – Are You On the Front Of The Wave?

It is our opinion there are incredible opportunities for the entrepreneur-in-waiting and the entrepreneur looking to diversify — Right Now.  Whether it is a home business startup or a small business startup – this just could be the right thing to be doing at the right time. With the public view of the economy as uncertain,  and other small business entrepreneurs optimistic but still cautious – this could just be the right time to put your energy and resources into reviewing small business startup ideas.  I will leave the complete analogy to a future post for one of my entrepreneur surfer partners – but the goal is to get out in front of the breaking wave. You want to set your timing to accelerate in front of your fellow small business competitors.  Is it the right time for every small business or every home business startup being promoted.  Unequivocally NO -  But this just could be the “Right Time For The Right Thing”

  1. Success in so much in life and so critical to being happy is about doing the right thing! Makes so much sense the right thing at the right time in a small business start-up

  2. I heard the theory of “hiring the help” many years ago when I owned an accounting business. As Accountants you think EVERYTHING goes by the “law.” What hire your manager? Absolutely! Hire any expert even if it’s so you’ll look like an expert! I like this article!

  3. So right on – If more people in business and in life would focus on doing the right thing – wow what a better world we would have. Could not agree more on the business side timing and doing the right things are key to a small business start-up – any business start-up!

  4. Wow your blog is really rockin’ love all the entrepreneur start-up articles and focusing on all the right things for a business person to be a successful entrepreneur. Thanks keep up the great content!

  5. If you are sitting way on the outside of the break zone, thinking you’re going to play it safe, I’d be on the lookout for the “freak clean up set.” The one that sends surfers scratching for the horizon, and puts a lineup through the spin cycle.

Hesitation is devastation in surfing, and in business.

The time to start seeking out opportunity is right now, look for a business model that is positioned to capitalize on major converging trends. A business model based on creating solutions for a hungry market regardless of the economy or their disposable income.

If you’re not wiping out, then you are probably not trying hard enough.

  6. I agree about hesitation once you determine the right path hesitating to take the action you decide on is insanity – not just being cautious!

Due diligence is both an art and a science! Follow a process to research – both external and your own internal self review. Timing can be based in science and research but can many times be mostly intuitive – you just KNOW – it feels right – when you know – Take that action immediately and don’t hesitate

Thanks for stopping in and joining the conversation. (Doing the right thing!)

  8. I think the right time is now. The present is a gift. Start doing today and don’t put things off for tomorrow.

  9. Timing is a big contributor to success. Such as Do It Now! And Take Action. Stop procrastinating. Though not the focus of this article it identifies a key behavior we all can encourage. Knowing the Bennis quote well I have to admit to a certain uneasy feeling – that it can make it seem like a manager is less important than a leader but it takes both leadership and effective management to have a successful small business start-up

  10. Yes most definitely this might be the right time for some businesses to start up. It is good to look outside of the box you live in. Just make sure to do your homework.

  11. A small business startup in 2010 – sounds at first pass like you must be crazy to most folks. Yet I too think you are out in front and establishing a strong foundation. You put more in during tough times to make sure it works… that makes a strong foundation for your small business startup that you can really build upon when the economy picks up…whenever that might be. I for one don’t mind the tough times – makes you better! Great article – really like what you have going on here

Thanks for stopping in and contributing to the conversation. I agree starting a business in tougher times builds a stronger foundation! Like the willow tree, the strong winds build stronger roots and branches that are flexible! I know personally having worked businesses that struggled in tough economic times – the businesses were leaner and meaner when the turn around came and could move quickly to take advantage of the turn!
